The Club had its beginnings twenty-three years ago, when a small group of enthusiasts met at the old Bursledon Community Centre in Lowford. They started with one mat which was laid diagonally across the floor as the hall was too short to accommodate the full length in any other way. As the number of members grew, funds were raised to purchase two more mats – but there was a problem.....! There were plans to extend the hall but in the meantime how to use both mats in a hall which was within Short Mat regulations but several feet shorter than the mats? Our heroes were undaunted. Visiting teams were amazed to see mats which extended to the end of the room – then went UP the wall! Today we play at Pilands Wood Community Centre, using four mats which, you will be pleased to learn, are firmly horizontal! The spirit of those pioneers, some of whom are still members, lingers on in the Club’s justly deserved reputation for friendly competition and a warm social atmosphere. In addition to our twice weekly meetings members can, if they wish, play in Friendly matches against other clubs. We also enjoy Club competitions and social events. The Club is affiliated to the English Short Mat Bowling Association (Hampshire County). Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player you can be sure of a warm welcome, so why not take that first step and get in touch?
